In Singapore, Joo Chiat is synonymous with the Peranakan culture. It is also Singapore’s first Heritage Town, housing a mix of traditional shophouses, historic religious sites and heritage homes.Built in the 1920s, the Peranakan shophouses along Koon Seng Road are one of the most representative icons of Joo Chiat, and is a living testament to the heritage of the neighbourhood. The pastel green, pink and yellow hues of the floral patterned tiles that detail their façade gave inspiration to this piece, which has adapted similar hues and elevated with a modern spin.
About the ‘One Degree North’ collection
At only 728km², Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world. What we don’t have in land area, we more than make up for it through conservation of our heritage, preservation of natural landscapes and enhancement through the built environment. The ‘One Degree North’ collection is inspired by memorable landmarks around Singapore, each telling a story about the area/landmark and also its significance to Singapore. Decipher where the coordinates on each artwork refers to, and you will know the painting title.
