Is a Storage Bedframe Worth It for an HDB Flat?

Buying guide · J. edition

In most HDB bedrooms, the wardrobe, the study desk, and the suitcase from your last Bangkok trip are all quietly competing for the same few square metres. For most HDB flats, a storage bedframe is worth it. It turns the largest unused footprint in your bedroom into closed storage, often as much space as a small wardrobe, without taking up any extra floor area. It's especially worth it in master bedrooms, where a queen or king bed takes up the most floor space, and in homes without a dedicated storeroom.

Why storage matters so much in HDB flats

We see this question in our showroom almost every week. HDB bedrooms are compact, and every piece of furniture competes for the same wall space. The area under a bed, roughly 2.9 square metres for a queen, usually goes to waste, or slowly fills with loose boxes and dust.

A storage bedframe puts that space to work behind a clean, closed base. There's also no gap underneath for dust to settle, which makes cleaning easier. The main things to get right are the storage type, the bed size, and managing humidity so stored items stay fresh.

Gas-lift or drawers: which is better?

It depends mostly on your room layout. Here's how the two compare.

Gas-lift Drawers
How it opens Whole mattress platform lifts on pistons Drawers pull out from the side or foot
Side clearance needed None About 50 to 60 cm for drawers to open
Best for Luggage, seasonal bedding, spare pillows Clothes and linens you use often
Ideal room Tighter bedrooms Rooms with space around the bed

With gas-lift, check that the pistons are rated for your mattress weight, since heavier hybrid or latex mattresses need stronger lifts.

The one we recommend for most households.

Teri Storage Bedframe

For most households, we suggest a gas-lift bedframe for its space-saving design and ease of use. The Teri's gas-lift mechanism is built to J. edition's own engineering specification, so it lifts smoothly with minimal effort. Anyone in the household can open it easily, with no more struggling to heave up a heavy mattress.

The queen size is on display at our showroom if you'd like to try the lift for yourself.

Queen or king: what size storage bedframe fits an HDB bedroom?

Measure before you buy. Here's the Teri Storage Bedframe at a glance. Overall dimensions are measured at the widest point, which is the headboard.

Queen King
Mattress size 152 × 190 cm 183 × 190 cm
Overall (at headboard) 190 W × 213 L × 110 H cm 220 W × 213 L × 110 H cm
Framed base width About 162 cm About 193 cm
Platform base width 152 cm 183 cm
Comfortable room size About 2.7 m W × 2.8 m D About 3 m W × 2.8 m D
Starts from $1,950 $2,050

Framed or platform base?

Framed base: the mattress sits inside a 5 cm frame, giving a neat, tailored edge.

Platform base: the base is the same size as the mattress, and the mattress sits on top. It takes up the least floor space, about 10 cm less across the room, which makes it a smart choice for tighter bedrooms.

How to check the fit

At the wall: you need a clear stretch of wall at least as wide as the headboard, 190 cm for a queen or 220 cm for a king. Watch for windows, switches, and power points.

Around the bed: allow at least 50 to 60 cm of walkway from the sides of the bed base, and about 60 cm at the foot.

A queen suits most HDB master bedrooms, and a king works well in larger ones. Check your floor plan carefully around wardrobe doors and air-con units. The 110 cm headboard height is also worth checking against window sills and wall-mounted fixtures.

This is where made-to-order helps. If your room doesn't quite fit a standard frame, an alteration may be possible. Before recommending any change, the J. edition team always goes through your room details and mattress details, because the right adjustment depends on your household's space and needs. That conversation works best in person, so we'd recommend bringing your floor plan and mattress information to the showroom.

Will stored items get mouldy in Singapore's humidity?

They can if the space is sealed and damp, but it's easy to manage.

  • Store only fully dry items. Never put away bedding or clothes that are slightly damp.
  • Use breathable fabric storage bags rather than airtight plastic for textiles.
  • Place moisture absorbers inside and replace them regularly.
  • Open the base to air it out every few weeks, especially during rainy months.
  • If your room gets little ventilation, run a dehumidifier or air-con dry mode occasionally.

Good to know

The storage base on J. edition bedframes is removable, which makes it easy to take out for a thorough clean, wipe down, or airing whenever you need to.

What are the downsides?

A storage bedframe is usually priced more than a basic platform bed, and it's heavier, which makes moving house more work. With gas-lift designs you need to lift the mattress to get anything, so it's not ideal for daily-use items. And a bed on legs has a lighter, more open look, which some people prefer in a small room.

If you rarely need extra storage, or you already have a storeroom, a non-storage frame may be the simpler choice. Our non-storage bedframes, such as the Teri Non-Storage Bedframe and Emery Bedframe, typically sit on 15 cm legs, which leaves enough clearance for a robot vacuum to clean underneath.

How much does a storage bedframe cost in Singapore?

Prices vary widely by size, materials, upholstery, and storage mechanism. At J. edition, our storage bedframe starts from $1,950 for a queen and $2,050 for a king. Made-to-order frames cost more than mass-market ones, but you get your choice of size, fabric, and finish, and a frame built to last.

Quick answers

Is a queen or king storage bedframe better for an HDB flat?

A queen fits most HDB master bedrooms comfortably. A king suits larger master bedrooms. Allow at least 50 to 60 cm of walkway on each side you use.

Is gas-lift or drawer storage better for a small room?

Gas-lift, because it needs no side clearance for opening. It's also what we recommend for most households at J. edition.

Can a gas-lift bed handle a heavy mattress?

Yes, if the pistons are rated for the weight. Check with the maker before ordering. At J. edition, we review your mattress details before recommending a frame.

What are the dimensions of the Teri Storage Bedframe?

Measured at the headboard, its widest point, the queen is 190 cm wide × 213 cm long × 110 cm high, and the king is 220 cm wide × 213 cm long × 110 cm high. The bed base comes in two styles: a framed base with a 5 cm frame around the mattress, or a platform base the same size as the mattress, which takes up less floor space.

What's the difference between a framed and platform storage bed base?

A framed base surrounds the mattress with a 5 cm frame for a tailored look. A platform base is the same size as the mattress, with the mattress sitting on top, so it takes up less floor space in the bedroom.

How much is a storage bedframe at J. edition?

Our storage bedframe starts from $1,950 for a queen and $2,050 for a king.

How long does a made-to-order storage bedframe take?
